Red worms or Red Wigglers were the first worm that we started raising here at Keith's Worm Farm. Their scientific name is Eisenia fetida. They get anywhere from 2 to 2.5 inches in length. Their diameter is between 1/16 and 1/8 of an inch. They double in quantity every 60-90 days. They like somewhat moist soil. It should not be drenched but should stream slightly when squeezed. For soil we simply use moist Sphagnum Peat Moss. This can be purchased at your local hardware store for about $12 a bale. This is the primary worm used for vermicomposting or composting using worms. One pound of worms can compost about 5 pounds of weekly scrap. Avoid acidic compost, such as lemons. If the soil becomes acidic, use egg shells or calcium carbonate to balance out the pH. This worm is very lively on the fishing hook. It is a smaller worm so a smaller hook has to be used. Their hide is not very strong, so make sure to bring plenty of these worms fishing or use the European Night Crawler. Red worms are great for catching pan fish and small-mouth bass. This worm is also a very good worm to feed to pet turtles. They tear these up. These worms enjoy shallow soil with plenty of surface area. In other words, you need to have beds with a big length and width but only require 8-12 of inches in height. These worms also feed great on the Purina Worm Chow. Their optimum temperature is room temperature (60-75°F). Order hereWe have a printable price list available here |
